How to Wear a Pheran: What Goes Under It and What to Pair It With
In short: wear a pheran over a thin kurta, a fitted top or a light sweater, with straight trousers, a churidar or jeans. Let it hang loose. Add a shawl or a stole when it is cold, and keep the shoes simple: juttis, mojris, boots or clean sneakers. That is how Kashmir wears it, and it works anywhere in India.
What to wear under a pheran
In Kashmir the pheran goes over a thin inner layer called a poots, a lighter pheran of the same cut (more in what is a Kashmiri pheran). Today most people wear a cotton kurta, a slip or a fitted top under it. In the coldest weeks, the forty days of Chillai Kalan from late December, a thin high-neck or a thermal does the job. Do not add a thick sweater: the pheran is the warm layer, and bulk under it spoils the fall. Our pherans have pockets on both sides, so nothing else is needed on top.
What to wear with it
| Where | Under | Bottom | Finish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Office, college | Thin high-neck or kurta | Straight trousers or jeans | Small earrings, flat shoes |
| Home, daily | Cotton kurta or slip | Leggings or salwar | Slippers; phone in the pocket |
| Wedding, Eid, festive | Silk or satin inner | Churidar | Shawl, jhumkas, mojris |
| Travel, snow | Thermal | Jeans and boots | Wool stole, cap |
Jeans suit the shorter, modern cut and look right in a city. A churidar or a salwar is the traditional pair and the better choice for a function. Straight trousers in a plain colour go with everything.
Shawls, stoles and layering
A pheran and a shawl were made for each other. Put a raffal or tusha shawl over one shoulder, or round both when it is really cold, and let the embroidery at the neck show. A plain stole works for the office. In Kashmir the kangri, the small wicker fire pot, is carried under the pheran in winter, which is one reason for the wide cut. Our shawls are made in Kashmir too.
Shoes, jewellery and hair
- Shoes: juttis or mojris for a function, ankle boots in snow, clean white sneakers with jeans.
- Jewellery: one piece is enough. Kashmiri silver jhumkas, or a plain ring. The embroidery is the ornament.
- Hair: open, or a loose braid over one shoulder. A stole over the head keeps the ears warm and looks right with a pheran.
Which pheran for which day
- Every day: an aari pheran in cashmilon. Warm, light, and the embroidery sits at the neck, cuffs and borders where it shows.
- Office and evenings: a sozni pheran. The work is fine and flat, so it reads as elegant rather than festive.
- Festive: tilla. The Kongposh boti tilla pherans in raffal wool catch the light at a wedding or on Eid.
- A gift: a Meeras raffal pheran, made in very small numbers.
- Over western wear: a Royal or Poshmal coat over a top and trousers.
Everything in stock is in the pheran collection.
Questions
Can I wear a pheran with jeans?
Yes. That is how it is worn in Srinagar's offices and colleges now. Straight or slim jeans, and boots or sneakers.
Can I belt a pheran?
Yes. A thin belt, or a shawl tied at the waist, gives it shape. Traditionally it hangs loose, and both look right.
Is a cashmilon pheran warm enough for Delhi or Lucknow?
Yes. For a north Indian winter a cashmilon pheran over a cotton kurta is enough. In Kashmir add a thermal under it.
Does a pheran have pockets?
Every KAARKASH pheran has a pocket on each side.
What is Pheran Day?
21 December, the first day of Chillai Kalan, when Kashmiris wear their pherans and post them. Any day is a good day for one.
What size should I buy?
Pherans are free size. Our pheran size guide has the measurements and where the hem falls at your height.
